Sunday, It’s A Miscellany

In the mood for some satirical postmodern Pooh Poohing?

Postmodern Pooh is intended to satirise not just a few celebrity critics, but the kind of critical writing that academics and students generally tend to come up with today – evasive, incomprehensible, and making enormous, unjustified claims for the power of texts and language. Here’s a sample from Felicia Marronez, Sea & Ski Professor of English at the University of California:

‘Pooh is trying to say that nothing short of a thoroughgoing revolt against the equivalence of word and thing, name and person, signature and certification can overcome the stifling of our linguistic freedom. A comparable insight enabled Derrida to show that South African apartheid, which some dull analysts had blamed on a tenacious and fearful white minority, was actually brought about by phonetic writing.’

Anil Dash says on his blog about AdSense – the “contextual” Google advertisements you see on the nav column to the left:

Google’s AdSense program is fantastic, a category killer. A good way to make money, a tasteful way to do ads, and a dramatic new way to turn hobbyist or personal websites into a more-than-break-even source of revenue.

I agree. In one stroke Google has bested the demographics laden ad industry, providing contextual ad content seamlessly and inoffensively.

I don’t know about the “more-than-break-even” stuff though. How much is Anil making from this pennies per click through service? When you sign up they ask you if you want to be paid “heads or tails”. Just kidding.

What is visible and invisible.
